I love this day.
I love the smell of it. The cold wind in it. The strangely bright colors and dark clouds. The leaves falling to the ground. Minus the new addition, I’d say this day is pretty awesome.
This morning I got fitted and strapped into the new brace, and it feels as if I have a toddler hanging onto my leg, hugging it tight like a second skin as it parasitically tags along for the ride.
I’m doing ok so far, though I went straight from the doctor’s office to a committee meeting, and found that getting around campus on crutches takes a lot more out of you than you’d think. Now, I know I’m no poster child for physical fitness, but I don’t generally get winded walking the equivalent of a block or two. Today I did though, and the palms of my hands and top of my rib cage are already proving tender to the touch. What a baby I am.
I did rig up an awesome contraption at my desk to support my leg. You ready for it? A metal trashcan.
This Friday’s show should be a bundle of fun! I’m lucky enough to have some big, strong, able-bodied friends who don’t mind lugging my gear around for me…oh, what would I do without them? I’m going to be concentrating on not falling flat on my face as I climb the stage stairs. Yes, that’s my goal for the night.
Last night I met with two fantastic people at a Starbucks to talk over new sound gear possibilities. The bigger the venue is, the bigger the sound needs to be – and it’s getting to be a little too tough for my smaller amps to do the job at some of these bigger shows. One of my fantastic friends knows a man (well endowed in the sound department) who owes him a favor, so he scored a rental PA system for me to use this Friday on the major outdoor venue, and even generously offered to do all the set up, tear down, pick up, and drop off work. What a dear. A wise man once said, “What good are friends if you can’t take advantage of them?” Awesome. And thank you, Jimmee. I hope watching me attempt to get into your bohemoth excuse for a truck is the beginning of my payback for your help.
I have decided that the coffee coated atmosphere of a cafe is incredibly conducive to great brainstorming. We ignored the people waiting pointedly for our table all night long. I am officially a loiterer.
After Friday’s show, I’m loading the gear again and heading to Sonoma State University to do a live radio show and interview. I’m quite looking forward to this opportunity, and I’m already working out my set.
After that is a show on the following Friday, and then I am hopefully taking a break to get my wisdom teeth pulled and allow my leg a chance to heal in privacy. But..you know, if I DID do a show with this bulky brace and crutches in addition to being obscenely swollen from the teeth removal, I might make really good tips. Might as well exploit it, right? Wrong. So very wrong.
Another day has come to an end, and I find myself sitting on the sofa and watching Conan. My stomach is a bit rumbly, but the effort to actually extract some food from the next room is too much for me at the moment. But I am content, with the tv on low and the lights off except for the small side lamp, and my leg propped up on the sofa pillow. What is it about home that is so very comforting?
